No Decks:
This week we've learned that "Works of Clay" does not do decks. At least not after this one. And for that simple reason that it doesn't really fit into the category of painting. Now if it were a new deck, first coat, and didn't constitute all the sanding and scraping, perhaps.
Or if it weren't rotting. A painter, at least this painter, is not equiped, nor does he know how, to fix rotting rail bars or their bases. And that doesn't even count the rotten holes in the floor!
Its been, thus far, everything but painting. And that is what I do. Owell. One more learning experience. At least I don't hate the work . . . I just don't know what I'm doing.
My greatest discovery in the past week is the great distractive power of music and spiritual teachings during tedious work. I must thank Bill Johnson for his six part teaching on healing and Ace of Base's last album Da Capo. They have been my constant friends during the hours of sanding and painting the small fiddle-bits around doors.

Clay

Financial Blessings At Last:
The damnable pit which we shall title "SallieMae Customer Service" has at last been navigated, successfully and with extra benefits. After battling my way through embittered foreigners, elevator music, and robotic death machines I have at last entered the promised land of $86 Loan Payments.
Mmm . . . milk and honey.
After which I was confronted with the Progressive Devil. Who has been properly kicked in the shin, an act which has decreased by insurance premium by 300 american dollars. Where once I paid $800 I will now only pay $509.
God is good. Why do I ever doubt his words. He's made it quite evident by telling me to quit my job, start a business, and then promise that it will continue and be fruitful. And backed it up with scripture that says that the righteous will not be forsaken, nor will their descendants beg for bread.
I will not be begging for bread. Nor will I be whoring myself to the Semolino (just a side thought) because I am on the path of righteousness laid out for me by the Holy Spirit.
This is His will. And what He determines to happen will, indeed, happen.

Tuesday
Perturbed:
So I've been in KC since Thursday. Almost a week. Why?
Originally, I was going to visit my parents for labor day. I was going to leave on Monday. But decided to stay just another day longer. I spent Saturday painting a friend's living room and Sunday my mom and I spent the entire day cleaning house. So needless to say is that I spent most of my time working.
Not much of a labor day.
So I stayed all day Monday and intended to leave Tuesday morning. Until I locked my keys in the truck. I think. I presume they are underneath a green, striped polo in the front seat. All attempts to open said truck have met in failure.
And a locksmith wouldn't be able to do any good on account of the ultra neccesary microchip, inside my keys, which must be coded with the stearing wheel. Granted, one could try the locksmith, one could also go to Ford and get a new key off the VIN (maybe?!), or one could even have their roommate next day their spare keys to KC.
I opted for option 3. They'll be here tomorrow. But today I got locked out of the house after a 6 mile walk (to mom's work and back) and had to break in through the kitchen window! What a trip.

Clay

Sallie:
So I thought I had it all together. I would get a forbearance and the consolidation would take place. That is what Man-Sallie told me.
Today I received a bill in my email for $217. But nothing else. No mention of forbearance or of consolidation. Nor the payment plan of $83 a month that I had originally chosen.
I better not get a foreigner this time. These matters should be handled by people fluent in English. I love foreigners, but Sallie should be a little more sensible when hiring.
I can't imagine that it is easy for someone who only speaks two-bits of english to help on matters of loan consolidation!

Smells Like Burning:
Student loans can burn in the fiery sea of hell for all eternity!!! And SallieMae, the prophet to the beast, can be cast in as well!
Apparently the wonders behind the financial aid system have done it again. Pissed directly on my face and said "HA." Meaning this. 2-3 months ago I initiated the loan consolidation process with the above mentioned Sallie. Sallie, at the time told me this, "Your loans will take 2-4 weeks to process and it will be another 2 months or so before you will need to make a payment."
Wrong!
At a point in time, a point I don't know because the following arrived at my parent's home . . . unbeknownst to me, a letter containing a booklet of SallieMae coupons arrived. These letters in bold letters stated that Clay should pay them "$214.00ish."
To which my jaw dropped and said "Like hell!" You see the dilemma arose from this. Sallie, in our prior conference, told be that my loans would follow this plan, post consolidation, $83 a month for 3 years and $145 after that. So, my response to $214 was adequate and I promptly called Sallie and she informed me that everything was progressing wonderfully; to my comfort.
Wrong again!
Because today I recieved a booklet of coupons from FHSU saying I needed to start paying $40 dollars a month for a Perkins Loan. To which I mildly cursed and then promptly called Sallie. She was much less cordial.
I spoke with a foreign woman who only knew two bits of english and even less about loan consolidation. She told me that I owed over $400 in back payments and that my consolidation was not yet complete. People its been 2 months; at least. This should have been taken care of.
After 15 minutes of mindless banter she gave up and I was put on hold to be transferred to a loan consolidation department. After 15 minutes on hold I was "let go." And the other end went silent.
Ergo I know nothing. Fortunately, I have grilled cheese sandwiches made with pepper jack and english breakfast tea to soothe my frustrations.

The Rite of Clay:
Color is important if you are a painter. Without color you are screwed. Without a sample you are even more screwed. Fortunately there is hope in the form of little color swatch samples. You have surely seen these lining the walls of nearly every hardware store, paint store, building store, and even Wal-Mart.
I've spent a good many minutes perusing these walls of color at Heartland Building Center (my supplier). Which can be tedious. But there was hope. There is what is known in my world as a . . .
Swatch Paddle
The swatch paddle is a conglomeration of every color in the Benjamin Moore Universe. It is about 3 inches thick and contains every single color that is displayed on those massive color walls. I doubt that I need to describe my deep yearning for this object . . . as to obtain one of these illustrious mechanations is one step in the painter's rite of passage.
Friday, I graciously recieved, with beaming eyes glistening with tears of joy (mild exaggeration), my very own swatch paddle. I have arrived. My supplier likes me . . . and that will make all the difference.

Clay

Semolino:
So I was doing drawings for Semolino. I thought about continuing to do so. We discussed pricing. Her response was that she would pay me in coffee gift cards . . .
The more I think about it the more infuriating it is.
It is an insult to my work. They all love it, but no one would be willing to pay its actual value. They see my illustrations, but they don't see the art in it.
And its an outrage and offense to consider them worth nothing more than coffee.

Monday
1 of An Infinitesimal Amount:
The morning was good. I sat down and began my labor. I enjoyed and dreamed about what the future would bring. I thought about how men in my family are meant to be hard workers. I was reminded of how my grandpa Clay owned his own barbershop . . . I see a slight trend.
It makes me wonder what my dad was created to do . . . he likes to roof, but he spent a heinous amount of years being a miserable computer programmer.
After lunch was a slump. My mind was wracked with thoughts about money and wages. I found fear and anxiety peering over my shoulder and frustration pricking at my nerves. So was the pink primer . . . fortunately the paint is red. I should have batted them all away, but the thought never crossed my mind.
All the while I know that I should be thankful and joyous. God is the one who set this up and continually pulls things together. He told me to get the truck. He showed me when would be best to quit my job. Faithfully I have. How easily I forget.
Tomorrow we can tweak what didn't go right today. And the next day tweak some more. Righteousness will come, excellence will follow.
And Sanchez will be kept away from my glasses! I don't need another mangled mass of frame.
Cheers and Luv,
Clay

And the Angels Sang:
Yesterday, at 12, my stint at the coffeeshop Semolino was over . . . and the angels sang, God smiled, and my coworkers cried. It was an emotionally mixed moment. On one hand I have been miserable for sometime working there and on the other I loved my coworkers and select customers . . . most of whom now possess a "Works of Clay" business card.
I can't wait for the feeling of freedom to kick in. For now I'm battling the awkwardness and the onset of anxiety. The realization that I just quit my job to start my own business, mind you I know a very small bit of anything regarding business matters.
Its hard not to fear.
But the bottom line is that I know God has ordained this, I know that I am pursuing his desires, and I know that I will not fail . . . no matter how overwhelming somethings can be. I have the designing done, for the most part, and I'm gathering research and mentally preparing myself for things down the road: client meetings, pricing, and coming projects.
For the concerned; I have more safety nets around me than is surely neccesary. Its almost like I'm not taking a risk!

Clay

3 More Days:
So I've been counting down. Each day at the Semolino brings its own frustrations and reasons to be thankful for leaving. Today it was annoying people. Granted it shouldn't be such a big deal . . . they tell me the coffee, I make it.
But it gets old.
Especially when they leave off important details like size.
But only 3 days. There are things that I will miss though: my co-workers and favorite customers. But I will be able to see them when I come in to get my own coffee and use the internet.
In business I just talked to one of my customers who would like me to do some graphic design work for a book about teaching leadership. It's my business, you know, I can do whatever I like to pay the bills. I don't have to only paint! Its great.
I should add graphic designer to my business card.
I would like to help small businesses with their own design someday. So many little guys have crap for a look and that doesn't help much when your image is one of the driving sellers.
. . . just need to remember that not everything can have a cute little icon to advertise with.
Luv,
Clay

Business Update:
The Business Cards have been sent to Northwestern Printers. There was a error reading the font so I didnt get them in by Friday, but it'll be good. No worries. I should be able to look at proofs on Monday. And hopefully I can get them printed by Wednesday since Friday is my last day at the Semolino and it would be nice to distribute some of them there.
My Invoices and Estimate pages have been finalized and the first bill to the Meckenstock Group has been written up. I'll be turning that in Monday.
I know have a rough schedule of the next few jobs. It should be about 2 or 3 months worth of work. Thats good. I need to learn somethings before I head out into the community at large! That part is a little nervy for me, but it will be awesome.
There was a painter named Joe Currey here in Hays, he's one of the best, that Shay has told me about and wanted me to meet. Apparently, it turns out he and his wife come into the Semolino every Saturday and sometimes during the week. I know their drinks: 1 large Hazelnut latte and 1 small Hazelnut latte made in their house mugs. They don't know me, yet, but one of my co-workers who saw them come in this morning mentioned that I wanted to meet him and was wanting to become a painter.
The wife's response was this "How did he (being me) know about my husband because he doesn't advertise?" My as of yet ungiven response is this "Shay told me." And conversation will progress from there.
This is all very exciting.

Clay

Paris:

Its been a habit of mine since I worked at the Grounds Department to name the major objects in my life.
It started with dear Philbert, my first bike, who was stolen and mutilated by evil people.
His replacement was Doris, who gets told that she has an old hooker's name when she frustrates me. The came Lappy the Laptop, Digi the Camera, Mrs. Peters the buggy at work. There is also Empi the Mp3 player.
And of course London arrived a few months back. He's doing wonderfully. I love that truck. Its good for a painting business. And its important to have a work crew. Thus far the crew consists of London, Sanchez the ladder, Phillip the paint holder, and, the newest, Paris the cell phone.
Its nice to have a cell phone. Except It was in roaming the entire time I was in KC and Branson. I have to give Alltel a piece of my mind. Or at least talk to them and get an understanding of my plan. Because I was under the impression that I had a pretty large coverage area.
But other than that a great investment.
Luv,
Clay
Monday
Progression:
Things are progressing. I have a logo design, various drafts of a business card, a letterhead made up, and a layout design for project samples. The look of Works of Clay is coming together quite famously.
I'd post images, but I'm going to wait until they are copyrighted. That way no evil Blog-Bandits can steal my work.
Another fun thing is that I may have the central character for a series of children's books designed and a title for said series. (I've just been told that NutMeg is a drug that is easier to o.d. on than LSD . . . its the oddest thing I've heard all day!)
But once again those objects are remaining hidden until the day that I can reveal them without them being stolen . . . at least online.
Its fun, its exciting. I'm tired and I have to work at 5:00 until close. But its ok. I only have 3 weeks of work at the Semolino remaining. I think I'll have a party of somesort. At least I'll cash in my free massage that I got for Graduation.
Yeah for freedom and women with strong hands named Sheena.

Works of Clay:
So. Its goes something like this. I've been more than frustrated with the present stuckness state of my life for sometime. Stuck refers to Semolino.
But what could I do? I wanted to start a business painting and I didn't see a reason to switch peon jobs; my dilemma. My resolution to quit Semolino. What does that mean? Start a business. What does that mean? Throw myself over the ledge marked faith and hope that I'm in God's will and that he will carry me on to point B.
Fortunately, I know that I am in God's will and that it is his desire for the painting business. I know this because personally I would probably never do it on my own accord. (My own accord would have kept me back 6 years ago when all I did was dream of hot men and play video games!)
Fortunately, God put some sense into me.
I think I've digressed. To the story. I was praying, two, three, four, nights ago (I should really try to remember these important things!), and I was asking God when he wanted me to quit. Then in my head-vision I see the number 14. (It's moments like these that people think your mad.) I then turn to my calendar, it has pictures of France, and find July 14th.
Its a Friday. Its fourish weeks from now. And it feels good. So I'd set the date in my mind. Then went in to Semolino. To learn, what?, that the bosses are leaving town again, today! The day I was going to make it official and release the peace and joy that I've been missing out on because of the damnability factor of being a Semolino "imp."
So July 14th I intend to start my business, fulltime, painting. Its name: Works of Clay/Painting - Proficient and Pliable. The story of which I will relate after my logo is in its final form! I'm excited. I'd be nervous, but is there really a point? It would only complicate things. I figure lets just push forward because my other option is down.

Clay

Apologies Friends:
Sorry, all you faithful readers numbering about 5, but my blog-ability has been on hold while I've been prioritizing my life. Well the prioritizing started today, so honestly the past week or so has really just been me being passive and semi-foolish with my time.
Bleh.
But fortunately I serve a God who likes to check in from time to time and keep me on track with his purposes.
He's good to me.
I'm going to go enjoy Applebee's. That is if Angela is working . . . if she's not I'll probably go enjoy something else! Til next time (which may or may not be Saturday) I bid you adieu.

Clay

Adventures in CO Springs:
Well it began with a four hour trip to the Kansas Border. On the way to the Colorado line we were first distracted by this quaint little museum/rest stop called Fort Wallace (an old train station sort of thing). And then a picnic at Mt. Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas. It was the most anticlimactic experience of my life.

But lunch was good and so was the cow-herding and snipe hunting. The cow had escaped its pen. I was just being a dork with the snipe-hunt.

The eventually, after leaving at 8:30 we made it to Colorado at 12:30. We made it to Colorado Springs around 4 (I think. It took awhile . . . it was probably more like 3:30. A 7 hour trip.) We first went to Garden of the Gods. It was beautiferous.

Afterwards we dropped Jayna off for the wedding rehearsal and went to have dinner with one of BJ's friends, Mike McShea. He's an interesting fellow. He took us to this authentic little Mexican place for dinner. It was good. We stayed at another friend of BJ's's appartment. Saturday we made our way to Starbucks and Manitou Springs.

I learned that Semolino was better than Starbucks. Our coffee is made with love and theirs is just slapped together to feed the masses: the McDonalds of coffee. Manitou Springs was alot of fun. Definitely an interesting place, but full of touristy garbage, but that, I suppose, is part of the interest.
Then there was the wedding, but I'll save that for tomorrow. To be continued.
Luv,
Clay

Definitely an interesting place, but full of touristy garbage, but that, I suppose, is part of the interest.
Then there was the wedding, but I'll save that for tomorrow. To be continued.

Blehgaaaaaaahrooompleh:
. . . . is the sound of Clay collapsing in a heap of fatigue.
Some days ago I made it a point to not go to Semolino on my off time. At least for a while. I'm there now. Bleh. The resolution came after getting stuck with other people's hours and dealing with frustrating people. I just didn't want to see the place anymore.
Not to mention I'd been working alot anyway!
On top of that i've not been saying no and allowing my days to be consumed by the thoughts and desires of the people around me. Needless to say is that that proffers no rest. And I sorely needed that!
And X-Men III sucked.
I've taken some of the time that I have had to continue my writing endeavors. This summer I'm writing a supplement and possibly a sequel to last summers "Homo Lapin." For any of you not aquainted I will gladly share if you ask. I've already finished a small, 5 page, supplement entitled "Boshanti and the Holy Comet." Its breath-taking.
Memoirs of a Geisha sucked too. About the only good thing I've watched recently is "Redwall" a thirteen episode cartoon based on the book by Brian Jaques. Which I just bought today. I wanted to read it on the way to Colorado Springs.
My friend is getting hitched this weekend. C Springs is 4ish hours away from Hays. I'll need reading material since I won't be able to draw, or design my business cards.
I should solidify my businesses name. Then I could make a Gmail account for it to go on said cards.

Clay
